Upington Airport (IATA: UTN), previously known as Pierre Van Ryneveld Airport, is an airport located in Upington, Northern Cape, South Africa. At 4900 metres, runway 17/35 is one of the longest runways in the world. The high elevation of the airport, extremely high summer temperatures and the fact that it was designed for the Boeing 747 necessitated the extreme length of the main runway.
The pecan nut industry has its roots in Mpumalanga and KZN, but the core of the South African pecan industry today is north of the Orange River in the Vaalharts area, Hartswater, Prieska, Upington and Orania.

Swift River Adventures invite you to experience the Orange River running through Upington in all its glory. Our half-day river rafting trip from Upington to Oukamp, provides the ideal breakaway from your normal routine. You will experience the Orange River with it’s abundance of bird life and throw a wave at the locals as they sit on the banks and fish.
On your 3-5 hour journey down the Orange, you will be accompanied by registered African Paddling Association (APA) guides. We use inflating two-person boats that are easy to paddle and steer even for less confident paddlers. The Mighty Orange River (Afrikaans/Dutch: Oranjerivier), Gariep River, Groote River or Senqu River is the longest river in South Africa. It rises in the Drakensberg mountains in Lesotho, flowing westwards through South Africa to the Atlantic Ocean.
The river forms part of the international borders between South Africa and Namibia and between South Africa and Lesotho, as well as several provincial borders within South Africa. Except for Upington, it does not pass through any major cities. The Orange River plays an important role in the South African economy by providing water for irrigation, as well as hydroelectric power. The river was named by Robert Jacob Gordon after the Dutch Royal House.
