GEMSBOK-UPINGTON: Master Maths en Master Science, ‘n nasionale franchisor wat addisionele klasse in wiskunde en wetenskap aanbied, het onlangs hul tweejaarlikse konferensie by die luukse Kievitskroon Landgoed te Kameeldrift buite Pre-toria aangebied.
Daar word jaarliks ’n Franchisee of the Year aangewys in drie kategoriëe vir Master Maths en een kategorie vir Master Science, wat nog slegs vyf jaar bedryf word en derhalwe besig is om te groei.
Master Science Upington is tydens die Gala-geleentheid aangewys as Runner Up Franchisee of the Year, die eerste keer wat hierdie toekenning gemaak is, weens die baie klein verskil tussen die eerste en tweede sentrum.
Die algehele wenner was North Ridge in Johannesburg, ‘n groot sentrum in ‘n hoë inkomste woonbuurt.
Voorwaar ‘n prestasie vir ‘n plattelanse sentrum in ‘n droogtejaar! Master Maths Upington en Master Science Upington word beide bedryf deur Paul en Madie Muller op die perseel van Hoërskool Duineveld en is daar om ‘n diens aan alle leerders in die Upington-gebied te lewer, ongeag by watter skool hul studeer.
GEMSBOK-UPINGTON: The under-12 Danone Nations Cup soccer tournament is moving into top gear with Northern Cape hosting the first 2017 provincial final on Saturday, 25 March at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium in Upington.
Everyone in the community are invited to come enjoy some Danone products like NutriDay and Yogisip, as well as loads of soccer fun! Kick-off is at 10am.
There will be five regional winners competing for a chance to play in the national finals that will take place on 1 July 2017 in Gauteng.
The competing Northern Cape schools will be: JTG district – Bankhara Bodulong Primary School Namakwa district – Aggeneys Primary School Pixley ka Seme district – Laerskool Kareeville ZF Mgcawu district – Die Kuil Intermediate School Francis Baard district – district final still to be played
Most of the regional winners have been com-peting in the tournament for a number of years in-cluding Bankhara Bodulong Primary School, who have been playing since 2008.
An advantage coach Gaza Mosala, who has been coaching the team since 2014, has is that he possesses a SAFA Level 2 coaching qualification. Before his transfer to Bodulong he was with Tshirologo Primary School in Venterdorp where he managed to get the school into the pro-vincial finals in 2012 and 2013.
But he admits he still has work to do with the players prior to the provincials. “During the cluster and regional stages I noticed the boys were very nervous,” Mosala said. “We need to get over that before the provincials.”
To achieve this he has organised a number of practice games against local high school under-13 teams. “That has helped. They are learning not to get so frustrated when losing the ball now and are definitely more confident.”
The team played 3 matches to get to the provin-cial finals. They won 2 and drew 1 to end top of the league.
“I know the pressures of a provincial finals day, but I try not to put any pressure on the kids,” the coach said. “If you are too hard on them they lose confidence. They must also make friends on the
day, and have fun.” A key player is 12 year
old right wing, Karabo Oliphant. He has been playing club football with local club, Bodulong United since 2015 and also played in the 2016 Danone Nations Cup.
Mosala believes this is a future professional in the making, he even went for trials at the School of Ex-cellence in 2016 but is not ready as yet. Karabo would like to make it big one day. “George Lebese of Kaizer Chiefs as my role model,” he said. “I love his style of football and how he al-ways assists in goal-scoring, that’s how I want to play.”

The San (Bushman) are Southern Africa’s original inhabitants. They are synonymous with the Kalahari Desert. Many years ago, these hunter-gatherer people roamed the plains of the Southern Kalahari. Today, there is a small number of San people living near the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park, but they have left behind unique attractions, such as the remains of permanent settlement on the farm Bitterputs in the Verneuk Pan near the town Kenhardt. In this way, like the Orange River, they bring life to the region in the form of many visitors interested in the origins of the San people. From the earliest days, people have been attracted to the region because of the river running through it.
These people were from local tribes such as San, Nama and Koranna, and included white travelers such as the great explorer Robert Gordon, the missionary Christiaan Schröder, and renegades from the Cape.
Back then, the river was known as the Great River and Gariep, but was later changed to the Oranje (Orange) River after Robert Gordon decided to row to the middle of the river’s mouth and drink a toast to the DutchPrince of Oranje. The reverend Schröder built the first church at Olyfenhoutsdrift. With the onset of more settlers in the region, irrigation potential of the Orange was soon utilized and the first canals made their appearance ten years after a church was built.Again, the Reverend Schröder dug the first canal. Three years later the first water- driven mill was introduced to the region, further stimulating commercial activities. In this way, the Orange River, as the region’s only reliable of water source, gave even more life to the area. It stimulated early development of farmlands as itswater was now spread far wider than the confines of its banks.
The history of the Southern Kalahari blends with the history of the people. Today, among the region’s historical attractions are San Rock engravings, Schröder’s and other old mission churches, his original home, the first water-driven mill, hand-built irrigation tunnels, an Egyptian-styled hydro power transformer station, waterwheels, a historical camel thorn tree under which the first town in the region was found, war graves and a date palm avenue. Tourists can visit all these sites and buy locally made San Artifacts.
